Where’s The Trout?  – Family concert

Join us for a lively and imaginative family concert, Where’s the Trout?, based around the famous Schubert String Quintet, featuring members of the Haldon Quartet with special guests Michael Allnatt on double bass and Anton Pigott on piano. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Tavistock Church, this engaging 45-minute performance will introduce audiences of all ages to the rich sounds of the whole string family (violin, viola, cello and double bass) alongside an exciting young pianist. Expect a delightful mix of classical music designed to surprise and inspire, with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.  After the concert, young audience members will have the unique opportunity to get hands-on and try the instruments themselves—making it a memorable musical experience for the whole family.

Schubert Trout with the Haldon Ensemble and Anton Pigott

Opening with Mozart’s Duo for Violin and Viola in G major, the audience is welcomed into a world of elegant conversation between the two instruments, full of clarity and charm. This is followed by Judith Weir’s The Bagpipers, a lively and characterful string trio that draws on folk-inspired elements, offering rhythmic energy and a distinctly modern voice. The programme culminates in Schubert’s beloved “Trout” Quintet, a masterpiece of warmth and lyricism, where its famous variations shimmer with melodic beauty and playful interplay.

The music throughout the evening highlights the richness of chamber writing, from classical refinement to contemporary colour, brought to life by Lindsay Braga (violin), Andrew Gillett (viola), Rebecca Allnatt (cello), Michael Allnatt (double bass), and rising young pianist Anton Pigott from Totnes. A former student of Jill Bird and soon to take up a scholarship at the Royal Northern College of Music, Anton returns after his acclaimed performance of the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto with the Haldon Ensemble last year, bringing fresh energy to one of the most celebrated works in the chamber repertoire.

      A Musical Duologue

Lindsay Braga (violin/piano) and Andrew Gillett (violin/viola/piano) are presenting a duet concert.

Through speech and strings they present duets by Bach, Mozart, Martinu, Brydern and others. They show how two is better than one and how the duet forms the basis of dialogue and interaction in chamber music.

This is an opportunity for them to share the heart of their ongoing musical exploration.
